  • Mardi Gras Mambo

    Mardi Gras Mambo

Growing up in South Louisiana was amazing. I was lucky enough to be born into the Cajun culture and for that, I am forever thankful. We are born with a spice for life, family is everything, there is a festival every weekend and we love any excuse to make a huge meal and celebrate. A huge part of our culture is Mardi Gras, a huge celebration that runs from the Epiphany until Ash Wednesday. It wasn’t until I moved to the Houston area almost 9 years ago, did I realize that everywhere else, it really is just Tuesday.

I also found myself explaining to strangers that I do bring my children to Mardi Gras and that the celebration is not at all what they were thinking. Yes, you do have some debaucheries associated with the celebration, but to South Louisianans, it is So. Much. More.

It’s taking turns bringing King Cakes to dinners and the excitement of seeing who ends up with the baby (they get to bring the next cake). It’s getting to the parade route bright and early to grab a good spot and tailgating until the parade makes its way to you. It’s dancing to all of the music around you, cooking out, and eating more king cake. It’s watching your kids throw their hands up for more beads and getting so excited when they catch a football, or a fancy light up toy, or a huge bag of beads. It’s searching for the “good parades” and making the short drive to experience them. The goal for every parade being who can collect the most beads. Seriously, each kid brings a massive shopping bag or garbage bag and we almost always accomplish our goal and fill them to the brim.

It’s getting invited to a ball, spending all day getting your hair and makeup done and getting to wear a beautiful ball gown. Enjoying the Krewe’s presentation, mingling with your friends and watching the performance/parade. It’s the suspense of getting to your table to see what sussies will be sprinkled around for you. Dancing until your feet hurt and then taking your shoes off and dancing some more.

It’s waking up at the crack of dawn to load your beads on a float and make sure your daquiri is iced down. Its throwing beads out to the crowds, tossing footballs and stuffed animals to little boys and girls. Its hopping off of the float at the end and enjoying the after party and listening to a live band play. It’s the music, listening to songs such as La Danse de Mardi Gras and Mardi Gras mambo and feeling it in your soul. Mardi Gras music is an experience and we listen to it every evening throughout the season and have dance parties in our kitchen.

My fondest memory as a little girl was watching the parade with my grandparents, aunts and uncles and my mom and grandmother teaching me how to throw both hands in the air, wave them and yell “throw me something mista” until I lost my voice. So, while everywhere else is just Tuesday, I will always choose to celebrate the season and always make sure that my babies know the joie de vivre of the season and their culture. And on Wednesday, we will go to mass to receive our ashes and make our Lenten promises in preparation for the Easter season.

… and my sweet Mardi Gras baby will always have an authentic King Cake every year for his birthday, even if his MaMa has to overnight it from Louisiana.

Laissez les bon temps rouler! Let the good times roll!

  • Red Beans and Rice

    Red Beans and Rice

Believe it or not, there are two southern staples that I have been trying to love for as long as I can remember. The first thing is sweet tea (or any tea for that matter). I have seriously been sipping on tea for years and while I have come to like some teas, I just can’t get my taste buds on board on liking sweet tea. The second thing is beans! Any sort of beans! My mom always had a rule and that was to taste a spoonful of everything on my plate before I could move on to something else. It is still a rule in my home, and I have to say that after almost 34 years, I finally eat beans! The recipe below is not your typical made from scratch recipe, and I typically wont eat any Cajun food that is made from a mix or a can, but this recipe works. We all love it and is the perfect fast and easy comfort food for cold and rainy nights. Now I’m handing my keyboard over to my husband so he can tell y’all exactly how to make it, because the Texan perfected it before the Cajun! Ha!

The recipe is pretty simple and doesn’t take long to make (30 min or so). You will need the following ingredients:

    • 1/2 tsp Cajun Seasoning
    • 1/2 tsp Dried Basil
    • 1/4 tsp black pepper
    • tsp cooking oil
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 1 lb smoked sausage (your preference) sliced and halved
    • 4 slices thick cut bacon, chopped
    • 1 1/2 cups chopped creole seasoning (aka holy trinity). We buy the precut seasoning from HEB
    • 1 cup chicken broth
    • 3- 16 oz cans Trappey’s red kidney beans with chili gravy
    • 1- 27 oz can Blue Runner creole cream style red beans
    • Cooked rice (amount depends on how many people, but at least 3 cups)

Heat the oil in medium size pot (preferably cast iron or Magnalite) and cook the chopped creole seasoning (vegetables) until soft and translucent. Once the vegetables are soft, add in the cut up sausage, bacon, Cajun seasoning, basil and black pepper, and cook until lightly browned and bacon is soft. This is the key to the flavor, you will want to make sure the sausage is cooked enough to release the juices and bacon is soft and not cooked too long. You don’t want crispy bacon for this recipe.

You then add the cans of beans and how ever much stock you prefer to get the consistency you want. I prefer mine thicker and not too runny. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes stirring occasionally. You will want to taste at this point as I usually add more Cajun seasoning or salt to preference. Serve over cooked rice and garnish with fresh cut green onions if you like.

*** please note that if you like creamier beans, use 2 cans of Blue Runner beans and 1 can of the Trappeys. We have made this recipe both ways but prefer a creamier style. It still yields the same amount. It is quick, easy and Ca c’est bon!!

  • Pink Cake Mix Cookies

    Pink Cake Mix Cookies

I know that I have taken a huge break when it comes to keeping my blog current. Life just handed our family a curve ball and I had to step away and focus on our family for a little while. Towards the end of our summer, I became so tired of our grocery bill, that I decided to pull out some old recipes and bake in order to make snacks stretch in our home and trying to get our grocery bill down in anticipation for the upcoming back to school stock up!

These little pink cookies have been a favorite in our home for years. I’m not sure where the recipe originated from, I just remember that my mom made a bunch of them for her sister’s 50th wedding anniversary celebration and we have been baking them since! Please note that you can use this recipe with any flavored cake mix, my people refuse to deviate from their strawberry/pink cookies!

    • 1 box of cake mix
    • 1 8oz container of whipped topping
    • 1 egg
    • Powdered Confectioners Sugar
    • Parchment lined baking sheet

Preheat your oven to 350° and line your baking sheets with parchment. In a bowl, combine the cake mix and cool whip. I like to blend these two ingredients first before I add the egg. After these three ingredients are combined, spoon out 1 tbsp. of dough and drop into a bowl of powdered sugar (about 1/2 cup). Thoroughly coat each ball in the sugar and place on baking sheet about 2 inches apart.

Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes until the edges are a slight golden brown. Let cool on cookie sheet for at least 10 minutes and then I usually slide the parchment off of the pan and onto my granite counter top and allow them to completely cool. Honestly, I am lazy and don’t want to clean up a powdered sugar mess by transferring to a cooling rack and it doesn’t make that much of a difference in how these cookies cool. Enjoy!!

    Mother’s Day Ideas

    Katie Denton Photography

As I contemplate what I may want the hubby and my boys to get me for Mother’s day, I also have a surge of emotions that this is my first Mother’s Day without my mom. I remember going to mothers day mass every year and giving our donation for a red carnation corsage in honor of our mothers. Red for mothers who were living and white to honor those in heaven. That hit me like a ton of bricks, yall! This year would be my first year with a white carnation if our church carried on this tradition! I am so thankful that a dear friend of mine called me and told me that our family was coming over for brunch at her house for Mother’s Day. That she knew what I needed before I figured out what I needed because she has been there, and is there herself. Ultimately, being a mother is the best gift
however, if my husband was inclined to get me anything, well here is what I would like. (ahem, Josh…. take notes)

    • I have to say that ultimately, the majority of us just want to sleep in late and wake up to a clean house. I don’t care if my kids are bickering, I just want the day off from cleaning and laundry.
    • A gift certificate from my favorite med spa for that VI peel that I have been putting off for the last three years. My last baby gave me melasma on my face and I have acne scarring from my teen years that I would love to attempt to get rid of. Plus, thirty something mamas want the OK to buy good wrinkle cream or splurge on facials and peels!!
    • This gorgeous mother Mary pendant from All the Wire. I love that Mary pendants are trending this season. I would seriously wear this pendant daily.
    • This gorgeous Gold Soul stack from Luca & Dani. I was gifted the Cardinal bracelet and I fell in love with it. I love looking down at my wrist knowing that my guardian angel is always with me.
    • This butterfly pendant from Free People. I love that it is made out of Mother of Pearl. I think anything Mother of Pearl is a classic and timeless symbol of motherhood. It is also my mama’s birthstone as well as my firstborn’s birthstone so it has an even more sentimental meaning.
    • A mommy&me or a family photo session! Seriously, I will never turn down a photo session with someone else behind the camera to capture memories of our family. Always get in the picture! Someday, those pictures will mean the world to your kids and grand kids.
    • ANYTHING HANDMADE BY MY CHILDREN! I love little tokens that they make for me. I treasure them dearly and love to look back on the things that they have created for me during all different stages of their life warms my heart.

Lastly, if your mama is nearby and you are able to hug her neck, give her a huge squeeze on Mother’s Day! You never know how many more you will have with her. If this last year has taught me anything, its to sit back and be present. Create those memories, say what you feel, give your kids experiences, and be present. One day all that will be left will be memories so make sure they are some good ones. To all of my readers out there who will be without their mama this year, you are not alone and I will be thinking of you!

  • Jo Malone Bubbles & Blooms

    Jo Malone Bubbles & Blooms

Hey y’all! If you haven’t noticed, flower arrangement events are so on-trend right now! Seriously, I have a black thumb and I am obsessed with these events! I swear, I always walk away with something gorgeous and manage to keep these arrangements alive for almost 2 weeks! Bubbles & Blooms hosted an event at Jo Malone  this past Sunday and the entire experience was exquisite!ACS_0151

Anicea greeted us with welcome arms and helped us to find our perfect scents as well as gave us suggestions on how to layer and build our scent collection as well as pamper us with amazing hand and neck massages. She was a doll and a fellow Louisiana transplant.  We bonded over last names, Louisiana ties and I cannot wait to go back for her to help me add to my collection!

    Building our arrangement

Christy and Coleen pulled out all of the stops with this arrangement! Seriously, I thought the arrangement from the Lily Pulitzer event was pretty.  This one was LUXURIOUS! I want to preserve it and keep it in my home forever.  The sweet smell of hyacinth, the strong rosy scent from the pink rose, the beautiful bold tulips, ranunculus, bells of Ireland, hydrangeas, and the calla lilies.  I’m not a huge lily fan, but these added the perfect amount of depth to the arrangement!

ACS_0143I won the sweetest door prize, a set of 3 bud vases with the prettiest lilies (and some other pretty “poofy” flowers) and Jo Malone gave us the sweetest little velvet pouch filled with sample scents! I highly suggest that you visit the Jo Malone location in River Oaks and let them pamper you while you personalize your scent profile.  Ask for Anicea and tell her that I sent you!DSC_5722DSC_5740

Of course, head over to Bubbles and Blooms and follow these talented ladies! I can’t wait to see what event they will be hosting next! These ‘mompreneurs’ have an amazing portfolio and provide the floral arrangements in some of the most exquisite stores and restaurants in the Houston area! It’s always refreshing to watch other moms create new things and crush their goals!

    Bloggers and Bouquets

    Hey Yall!
This weekend was a packed one! I do have to say, after the weekend’s events, my house smells divine! Friday night started off with a fun girls night out at Always Floral Spring! We learned how to make a whimsical floral arrangement around a gorgeous farmhouse table. I was so proud of myself and learned a TON of different things about putting together an arrangement. I’ve attended similar parties in the past, but I swear, you learn something new every single time! I learned that I absolutely adore the way chamomile looks and smells and now I’m on a hunt for the plant for one of my pretty flower pots! I also love how Sabrina has her shop set up! It is very farmhouse/flower market chic! It was so interesting to see the two spaces intertwined when you walked in! Yay You’re Invited created a gorgeous balloon arrangement that made for an amazing backdrop along a shiplap wall. There was a very “Magnolia” feel to the entire night! If you are in North Houston/Spring/Woodlands area, definitely call and schedule your girls night ASAP! Plus, its directly across the street from Bluewater Seafood. Word on my local cajun pages is that it is some of the best boiled crawfish in Houston!
